Cine este Lao Zi? Tao te Qing
Numele lui Lao Zi, care inseamnă „Bătrânul Maestru“, apare pentru prima dată in Insemnärile istorice ale lui Sima Qian.
In capitolul consacrat familiei lui Confucius si biografiei lui Lao Zi si biografiei lui Hanfei Zi, acesta spune că Lao Zi s-a născut in satul Qu Ren, districtul Li, localitatea Ku (azi Hao din provincia An Hui) din statul Chu. Numele lui de familie era Li, iar prenumele, Dan sau Er.
A servit ca director al Bibliotecii statului Zhou.
Dan înseamnă „cel cu urechi lungi”, ceea ce ne face să presupunem că Lao Zi avea o înfățișare aparte.
Ca bibliotecar si director al Bibliotecii dinastiei Zhou, a căpătat probabil atât cunostinte si o virtute superioare, cât si viziuni de o mare pătrundere asupra transformărilor sociale, ascensiunii si declinului dinastiilor.
„Odată, Confucius s-a dus in regatul Zhou să-l întrebe pe Lao Zi despre rituri…
Lao Zi i-a dat următorul răspuns:
«Mândria, lăcomia, aroganta, ambitia nu sunt de niciun folos, trebuie lepădate… Fiul omului mă ridică chiar dacă nu sunt cineva, pe când demnitarii mă privesc de parcă nici n-as exista.»
Confucius a plecat si le-a spus discipolilor sãi:
«Dragonul’ urcă la Cer pe aripile vântului. Oare nu este Lao Zi acest dragon?»”
(Ana-lectele lui Confucius).
Vedem din acest citat că cei doi mari maestri au trăit cam in aceeasi perioadă, iar după atitudinea de reverență a lui Confucius față de Lao Zi
se poate presupune că acesta din urmã era mai in vârstă.
Stim că Confucius s-a născut in anul 551 t.Hr, iar Lao Zi, probabil, in anul 570 i.Hr.

Who is Lao Zi?
The name of Lao Zi, which means “Old Master,” first appeared in the Historical Records of Sima Qian.
In the chapter dedicated to the family of Confucius, the biography of Lao Zi, and that of Hanfei Zi, it is said that Lao Zi was born in the village of Qu Ren, district Li, Ku locality (today Hao, in Anhui Province), in the state of Chu. His family name was Li, and his given name was Dan or Er.
He served as the director of the Zhou State Library.
The name Dan means “the one with long ears,” leading us to assume that Lao Zi had a unique appearance.
As a librarian and director of the Zhou Dynasty Library, he likely gained superior knowledge, virtue, and profound insights into social transformations, the rise, and fall of dynasties.
“Once, Confucius went to the Zhou Kingdom to ask Lao Zi about rites… Lao Zi gave the following response:
‘Pride, greed, arrogance, and ambition are of no use; they must be abandoned… The Son of Man lifts me even though I am nobody, while dignitaries look at me as if I do not exist.’
Confucius left and told his disciples:
‘The dragon rises to Heaven on the wings of the wind. Is Lao Zi not that dragon?’ (Analects of Confucius).
From this quote, we see that the two great masters lived around the same period. Judging by Confucius’s reverent attitude towards Lao Zi, it can be assumed that Lao Zi was older.
We know that Confucius was born in 551 BCE, while Lao Zi was likely born in 570 BCE.
